USB PD 3.1 EPR AVS Protocol Controller

Description
The CY2332H is a highly integrated USB Type-C® power delivery (PD) controller targeted for Revision 3.1 V1.5 Extended Power Range (EPR) with Adjustable Voltage Supply (AVS) 15~28V in 100mV/step resolution for VBUS output. In addition, the CY2332H supports Qualcomm® QC2/QC3 protocols for the premium USB Type-C adapter and charger applications. The enhancements of CY2332H over existing CY2332/CY2333 include efficiency improvement with 5mΩ Rsense, and a higher CC1/CC2-short-to-VBUS protection up to 31V for larger voltage and output power applications such as premium gaming notebook PC adaptors. The CY2332H provides two kinds of packages: DFN-14, a pin-to-pin upgrade part from CY2332/CY2333 DFN-14, and QFN-24, a non-pin-to-pin part from CY2332/CY2333 QFN-24 but without the need of VBUS MOS switch whenever co-works with a DC/DC controller with a separated static DC power.

Typical Applications Circuit
The CY2332H is shot for PD 3.1 EPR/AVS 15~28V application. There are 3 scenarios as shown in the figures below.

Figure 1 shows a CY2332H DFN-14 used to implement one-port USB PD 3.1 AC adapter. The CY2332H plays as a compact PD 3.1 decoder with high-side current sense and analog feedback through photo couple.

Figure 2 is used to demonstrate how a CY2332H is used to implement a one-port DC charger, where a buck-booster DC/DC controller is controlled by a CY2332H QFN-24 to output power to the device with feedback path through I2C communication. With the suitable control of power enable and disable, there is no need for the PD output VBUS switch.

Figure 3 is to express how a two-port AC adapter is implemented by the CY2332H QFN-24 and DC/DC controllers. Some of the advantages in this topology can be identified: expandable to multi-port based on I2C bus, smart power sharing without external MCU, standby power optimization premium through GPIO control, and no need for PD output MOS switch per port!
