CY53782

USB PD3.1 DRP Controller With I2C Interface

Description
The CY53782/CY53782H (CY53782) is a highly integrated USB Type-C® PD3.1 Dual-Role Power (DRP) controller to support Extended Power Range (EPR) / Adjustable Voltage Supply (AVS) up to 36V and Standard Power Range (SPR) / Programmable Power Supply (PPS) up to 21V.

The CY53782 is targeting for operating with external MCU through the I2C Interface pins (SCL, SDA), interrupt or UART mechanism. With the I2C registers and commands defined by the CY53782, the MCU could control the CY53782 to play as a sink controller to get the desired Request Data Object (RDO) from a PD3.1 compliant source adapter, or to play as a source PD controller to provide Power Data Object (PDO) capability to supply a Type-C connector equipped device (TCD). The CY53782 could consume as low as 50uA to meet requirement of equipped battery-power devices during the power down mode.

The CY53782 supports the QC2.0/3.0 functions and dead battery during the sink role, and provides both I2C control and VFB feedback for the DC/DC controller during the power negotiation. Meanwhile, the host MCU further could inquire about status of various I2C registers and control GPIO pins for intended applications. In addition, the CY53782 integrates Rp/Rd termination resistors for DRP, and operates from 3.3V up to 36V with low side current sense topology.

Based on high-voltage process, the CY53782 offers VBUS short protection for CC1/CC2 pins up to 34V. The smart built-in firmware of the CY53782 offers comprehensive safety protection schemes, including over-voltage protection (OVP), under-voltage protection (UVP), over-current protection (OCP), and moisture detection between DP and DN.

Typical Applications Circuit
The CY53782 plays as a DRP controller after the power-on initialization. The CY53782 alternates periodically the Type-C CC1/CC2 pin connections between the pull-down resistance, Rd, and pull-up resistance, Rp.

The CY53782 is targeting for operating with external MCU through the I2C Interface pins (SCL, SDA) and interrupt mechanism as shown in Figure 1 below. With the I2C registers and commands defined by CY53782, the MCU could control the CY53782 to play as a sink controller to get desired RDO from a PD3.1 compliant source adapter, and to play as a source PD controller to provide PDO capability to supply a TCD device. The CY53782 could consume as low as 50uA to meet requirement of equipped battery-powered devices during the power down mode.

The CY53782 provides multi-master I2C communication for DC/DC controller and the host MCU, where the CY53782 not only acts as an I2C master to control a bi-directional DC/DC controller, but also simultaneously plays as a I2C slave to receive the control signals from the host MCU. The CY53782 provides 2 gate drivers for the external VBUS MOS switch control of single-direction or bi-direction DC/DC controller.

Meanwhile, the CY53782 supports QC2.0/3.0 functions and dead battery operation during the sink role, and provides VFB feedback and I2C interface for DC/DC controller during the power profile negotiation. In addition, the CY53782 operates from 3.3V up to 36V with 5mΩ low side current sense topology, and is embedded the discharge paths of VOUT and VBUS.

If the host MCU does not support the multi-master I2C, the UART interface of CY53782 could be enabled to communicate with the host MCU.
Figure 1. The CY53782 can support multi-master I2C communication topology, where CY53782 acts as the I2C master to control the DC/DC controller and simultaneously acts as the I2C slave to receive control signals from the host MCU.
